Once In a Lifetime Photo Shoot

One of my favorite clients is Animal Specialty Group. ASG is a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital committed to providing the most advanced diagnostic, medical treatment, and surgery available in Los Angeles. They are a group of highly skilled veterinarians each with a specific field that they are experts in. The entire staff is amazing, and after spending a week there, I realized that these people are extremely gifted as they connect with the sick, old, and injured animals. I'll go into more detail on the cool stuff they have there in a follow up post, here are a few photos:

After spending some time there, everyone was comfortable with me and they were confident that I wasn't going to step on any animals or trip over any IV stands or needle trays.

The next week they asked me back for rare photographic experience.

Meeting Mac the Tiger

Mac had a growth removed in the field for a biopsy by Dr. Jenny Conrad. Unfortunately the results were not good.

Michael and Cheryl drove 16 hours straight from Wildcat Haven Sanctuary in Oregon to the ASG Hospital in LA.

He was a sweet giant kitty cat. Look at him in the exact same pose as my son's friend's kitten. He just weighs 300 pounds more.

The story of the day starts here after Mac got a couple of nice shots of "Sleep Tiger Happy Juice" while still in his transport cage. Next, they took x-rays and a CT scan

While Mac is being shaved and prepped, Oncologist Dr. Mary Kay Blake checks the scans and X-rays.

Warning

It get's only a touch bloody from here on,

but if you are squimish about blood,

then you you should stop here and go back to the kitten shots.

There were dozens of close-ups shots and overalls of the surgeons removing a large area of skin from Mac's side. Here are just a few that show the skilled stitching of the doctors. The skin and the under tissue were very thick. A fiberous protective armor. They went through dozens of scalpuls. Dr. Kirk Wendelberg and Dr. Michael Huber were working for about an hour. I would say that the piece of skin was about 12 x18 inches in size. The doctors then had to stretch the skin back together, trying to make up the 12 inch gap. That took an enormous amount of strength and skill as the methodically cut the connecting tissue under the skin and had to avoid any of the arteries that fed to it. I was on a short ladder shooting down most of the time. There wasn't a lot of room to move around and I really wanted to stay out of everyone's way.
There was a short 5 second episode where the anesthesia tube had slipped to far from Mac's mouth. He made a noise that was sort like a cough-growl and started to slowly wrap his front leg around Dr. Wendelberg. The skilled staff got him back out in a jiffy. Although Mac is a huge gentle cat, waking up on the table would have caused a huge panic reaction for him. We all breathed a sigh of relief as the adrenalin levels in each of us came down from a spike.

The last comment I heard as I was leaving the OR was that Mac was going to be upset when he wakes up and realizes that they didn't match up his stripes when they stitched him up.

I don't use black glass that much for my jewelry shoots. Here is an example where the black was sooo much better than the shots I tried on white. The radiance of these stones really pop on the black. This also shows that these would look amazing when wearing a black velvet dress.

The colors and patterns in these black opals are just amazing to me. They are like little planets. Super rare and expensive, the 5th from the top had the highest price tag of $52,000.00. What a treat it was to hit them with 1200 watts of light.

This brand new vault was super high-tech. I can't tell you where it is, or I will be killed, but I must say, this was quite an impressive set-up. Dual key, fingerprint scan access, this media vault is temperature and humidity controlled while being monitored 24 hours a day.

Answering an Emergency Photography Call For Mindy Weiss

I got the call early one Saturday morning. It was the emergency line, the caller ID read MWPC. Flowers had been delivered to the Mindy Weiss Party Consultants office for a project, and they desparately needed to be photographed. I had a brief window to shoot before my wedding that day. I had no time to think or get to the studio to pick up any lighting. I had only one camera and one lens at home. I raced to Beverly Hills, sprinted up the stairs to the offices and scouted out the best natural light. Without a tripod, I shot, holding my breath as I pressed the shutter button. Minutes later, the mission was accomplished. I bid the staff farewell as I journeyed to my next job of capturing images.

These guys rocked a photo shoot on one of our rare rainy afternoons in LA. They were involved in an awesome project called Citizens of the World.
I documented that project the previous week at Capitol Records Studios.

Mitch and Heshanti braved the windy cold rain at the Santa Monica Pier a few weeks ago. It actually made me scout and shoot in different ways than I usually would have at that location. We also did some shots at the studio earlier in the day. We have one more shot planned on a helipad in Marina Del Rey. I can't wait for that one.

Shooting these Engagement Portraits at The Aquarium of the Pacific was a creative lighting challenge. The Staff is totally cool with you shooting there, as long as you don't carry any lights or tripods, or drop shit in the stingray tank. The high ISO capabilities of todays DSLR cameras make these shots work in some really dark rooms.

This is a project that took about a year to create. The Moleskine notebook is one of my first full doodle books, it's from 2008, and it's interesting to watch my style evolve.
The music track was mixed over the course of a few years. It was originally called " Sloe Gin Fizz," I'm not sure why though.
It seemes to have the tempo to go with the book. About 4 more tracks of intruments we added after I played it while watching the Moleskine movie.
Slated for my doodle blog "A Doodle a Day," I though it was cool enough to go on the Steam Shovel.

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered my photo card decks by Chase Jarvis, and Strobist (David Hobby). Zeke Kamm from Nice Photography Magazine has put together a really cool product: Trade Secret Cards - They are perfect size to collect, and they are printed really well. Some of the artist's favorite shots are on the front, and the back has a nicely done lighting diagram. I think they are on to something here. Wish I thought of that.
They are like little pocket sets of creative and technical inspiration. Great holiday gift for a photographer.

Chris Johnson | Cornerback, Oakland Raiders

I had the pleasure of shooting Chris Johnson this week at the studio. He was totally chilled, he showed up alone, with no entourage. He had a great smile, but as usual I am drawn to the more bad-ass photos. This guy is fast, really fast.
He has run the 40 yard dash in 4.18 seconds, which is tattooed on his calf.

I had a very unique opportunity 090909 to be asked to photograph 9 weddings starting at 9:09 AM. It was a media frenzy, which made it rather challenging to photograph. It was a blast though. It's amazing that the look on a bride's face as she is walking down the 99 cent aisle is identical to a bride's face walking down the isle at a Ritz Carlton. Now don't get me wrong, the surrounding of a beautiful garden can naturally be better than some Sunny Delight bottles with plastic flowers glued to them. None the less the weddings on 09-09-09 were really quite special, and I will hold the experience close to my heart. Everything at the wedding was made from things in the 99 Cent Store.

Mindy Weiss's "Most Ridiculous Wedding Event Ever."

This past Sunday was an amazing experience for me. I was honored to be asked by Mindy Weiss, one of the top wedding planners in the world to speak at her very first wedding event. I have spoken before to a room of photographers, but this was a much different audience. I was speaking to brides and wedding planners, some who had flown in from around the country. My topic was:
"10 Tips For Getting the Best Photographs on Your Wedding Day."

Lots of great items to leave with.

I was blown away by the design and detail of the dessert bar that
was created by the super talented Amy Atlas.

The Cake Divas had a fun wedding cake decoration contest.

The coolest thing was that Lisa won with this delicate all white design. I am photographing her wedding next March.

Mary Dann unveiled a really slick video album.

There was also a bouquet making contest.

I have such a connection to these photos. What a great joy it is to be a photographer. I had the pleasure of photographing their parent's wedding. Since then, we have met every year for individual photos of the kids and sometimes some family photos. They are like family to me. I have watched them since they were only a twinkle in their parent's eye's under the chuppa.

I set up a lot of my lights today at the studio. I'm doing some final analysis and tests for my presentation at PartnerCon in New Orleans this November 3rd-5th. This year is going to be incredible. There are locations shoots with some of the best photographers in the business. We're also donating portraits to families that lost there photos in Katrina.
I'll be talking all about lighting equipment on Wednesday November 4th from 2-3PM.

I had the pleasure of photographing the directors of this movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The shoot was a couple of weeks ago and these guys were super cool and really excited as they were preparing for the movie's release.
I'm thrilled for them that this weekend's top grossing film was "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," bringing in over $30 million.

I was familiar with the book, and often read it to my 4 year old son. He's a bit too young to see the movie, but I look forward to watching it with him in a year or two.
